After such a dry start to the summer, I suspected we might be in for some rain for our long weekend at Losehill Hall, Castleton, but in the event, we had just a little, most of it on Friday afternoon, as we climbed Cave Dale, passing the Norman remains of Peveril Castle, onto the limestone plateau. The rain eased off enough to give us views to Mam Tor and the Great Ridge (our Saturday walk), and Win Hill which we'd be climbing on Sunday. The temperature was fine for walking, not too hot and with a bit of a breeze, and it improved as the weekend went on.That evening the manager took us out into the grounds to try to spot the resident tawny owls (which then taunted us by calling right outside our windows that night!).

On Saturday we took the route round the back of Castleton, stopping in the village for a look in the shop windows, and then slowly up the hillside to reach Mam Tor, where we had a snack before striding along the ridge towards Lose Hill (more rain!), then wended our way through farm land back to Losehill Hall. After tea and cake, a few of us drove to Bradwell where there were four well dressings, pictures made painstakingly from petals stuck into mud on boards, and then erected at various spots through the village. Originally a Pagan thanks for spring water, they now take a variety of themes and appear all over the Peak District at different times during summer. Other women did a bit of retail therapy in Castleton. Then it was another large dinner followed by some silly games!

Sunday saw us heading across fields towards the village of Hope,( where one woman commented that everyone there is living in hope..) then up onto the peak of Win Hill, a steep climb in parts, but well worth it for the views over Ladybower reservoir. We got a bit stuck in towering bracken on the way down, so took a pretty detour along the river and through woods, worth the extra mile or so! Back for more tea and cake, and some hot baths, and it was sunny enough to sit in the garden for pre- dinner drinks. We again played more games of cards, and all had a good laugh together.

Our last walk on Monday morning was through the valley towards the old road which collapsed in 1979 due to landslip, having a peer inside Odin's mine, an ancient lead mine, then to Treak Cliff cavern where some of us took a tour inside to see the Blue John mineral deposits, which are still carefully mined to make into ornaments. A final walk through Castleton before saying our goodbyes and driving homeward.

"What a wonderful weekend, and a great introduction to the walking world! I have loved every minute, the food, the accommodation, the walks, the company, even the rain. I will definitely be back for more. Many thanks for a wonderful weekend" Andrea

"A brilliant weekend, well-organised and providing everything we needed in such a gorgeous setting, both house and town. It's hard to think what could better drinks on the patio of a formal garden before dinner, after a beautiful walk with great company at a nice pace. It was a great group again-like last time. And thank you too for the special treats of home-made cakes and chocolate." Jean

Eight of us enjoyed a hot sunny weekend of glorious walks on the Dorset coast. Five women arrived in time for a Friday afternoon walk up the hill behind the village and onto the old drovers’ track, with great views of the coastline, anticipating Saturday and Sunday’s walks. There were lots of sheep on the hills today, and we had to rescue one which was stuck on its back. The other walkers joined us for dinner in the hotel, where we all enjoyed a very good meal.

An early start on Saturday before the sun became too strong took us up onto the cliffs and westwards towards St Catharine’s Church at Holworthy. Although the church was closed we enjoyed a peaceful rest in the gardens overlooking the sea. On such a beautiful day everyone was more than happy to be outside enjoying the sunshine.

On the return leg of our walk, some women decided to take the roller coaster coast path, while others walked a more level path further inland, which followed the contours more closely. We could all keep each other in sight as we walked, and everywhere was abundant with wonderfully colourful wild flowers. We admired the arch of Durdle Door, and relished the coldness of an ice-cream towards the end of the walk. Some of us had a welcome swim in the pool, and later, having showered and changed, we met for a jug of Pimms before another very good dinner. To round off the day, most of us strolled down to the cove as darkness set in, to enjoy the phosphorescence of the waves as they broke in the bay, and the stars coming out in the sky.

Sunday was a bit windier, but still bright and sunny as we walked over the cliffs eastwards, pausing above Arish Mel and then heading down to Mupes Bay. We had great views towards Warbarrow and Kimmeridge Bays and then looped back along the ridge pausing to marvel at the rock formations and remains of the fossil forest before heading down to Lulworth Cove beach for our last lunch. We returned to the hotel via the fish shack and the ice cream parlour, a little sunburnt and tired, but having had a super weekend of walks and companionship.

Really enjoyed my weekend at Lulworth Cove. The accommodation was comfortable, clean with excellent food. Barbara was a very experienced guide, which made the wekend go very smoothly and she did more than was required of her. Extra touches like Anne's homemade cake-delicious-made it feel that you were away with good friends. The walks were well planned with beautiful scenery. Claire.

There are still a few places available on our 4-night break on the north Cornish coast in September. Our accommodation at Bluff Centre, in the words of its owners, Charlie and Marianne, "offers the intimacy and freedom of home with the comfort and care of a good hotel". Have a look at their Website to see its stunning location and tasteful decor. The walks along the coast path are quite undulating, as you'd expect, but at every turn you'll be distracted by the sight of the sea and the sound of seabirds. It's just spectacular! Walking on Bodmin Moor we'll climb two tors and see evidence of ancient civilisations in this now almost deserted landscape. I also have some river walks planned and we'll have plenty of time for it all with 4 nights accommodation. Charlie will be available to taxi us to or from the linear walks, so you won't need to use your car once you've arrived. Or you can get there easily by train to Bodmin Parkway from where we have arranged a shared lift.

This 4 night break is remarkably good value at £335, including all meals, guided walks and packed lunches, so get in touch soon if you'd like to come! (Some single rooms are available at a supplement).
With lots of help from my website designer, Helen, it's finally ready to send. So do let me have any feedback please!

I can't believe the year's going so fast! We're halfway through August already! I hope you're able to get out and enjoy the longer evenings. It's very relaxing, isn't it to be outside after a long day, in the cool of the evening? Let's hope it lasts for a bit longer, into September, for an Indian summer!

In July, the walking weekend at Lulworth Cove in Dorset went really well, with hot sunshine throughout, making the hotel pool an essential for after the walks, not to mention the ice cream van!

I've recently returned from the Peak District, where we had a great time at Losehill Hall, with four good walks, all of them straight from the door.Click the links to read all about these walks and see the photos.

Wish you'd been there, or if you were, can't wait for more? Well, there are more glorious coastal walks on offer in Cornwall in mid September. Read on for more details.
