What a stroke of luck we had with the weather in this so-called “Barbecue Summer” which seems to have passed us by! The forecast was dire, but in the event, we had only one brief shower, just to test that our waterproofs really were, and a quick coffee in the pub soon sorted us out. The rest of the time we had perfect temperatures for our three walks from Hartington, going east, south and north, in the dramatic limestone gorges of the infant River Dove, through farmland, or with distant views towards the Roaches. We crossed into Staffordshire and then meandered back into Derbyshire, and explored the remains of a Norman fort, built after the invasion of William the Conqueror. We enjoyed good meals at Hartington Hostel, and walked out on Saturday night to hear a live band at the nearby pub, bringing out the closet rockers among us! A great group of women, for a super weekend of walks, chat and laughter! “I enjoyed this very welcoming weekend break. The company and walking were just right. I didn’t know anyone in the group before, and my first experience of WOW was fun and friendly. I would like to join WOW for more breaks like this.” Androulla “An excellent weekend with many scenic routes. The group was very friendly and we all had great fun with the many backgrounds we came from. Ate far too much of the good food provided! Will go again” Shahina
